Bruce C.

When Bruce was laid off from his long-time job due to market conditions several years ago, it became a struggle to pay the bills and became even more difficult to maintain his home like he wanted.  Bruce had been very active and was a competitive wheelchair racer, but after shoulder issues, shoulder surgery and other significant health concerns in recent years he wasn't been able to make necessary repairs and updates to his home, and it was unfortunately beginning to fall into disrepair.  He didn’t want to ask for help but reached out to Doug Mitts for his advice and options about possibly selling his home.  They realized together that the best option wouldn't be to sell but to make the necessary repairs and modifications that would allow him to stay in the home for as long as possible!

A detailed plan was developed, improvements were prioritized and the most immediately needed repairs were done.  Damaged siding was replaced, the master bathroom was gutted and reconfigured to make it more functional and handicapped accessible, and a lift system was installed to improve his independence.  An outside work day was scheduled and, with the help of countless volunteers, 2 old decks were removed, overgrown landscaping was removed, the yard was re-graded, a drainage system was installed and the base for a large new patio was installed.  Some interior painting has been done and the old carpet has been replaced with a hard surface material, which greatly helps with maneuverability with his wheelchair.  There is still more work to do, but we are committed to helping Bruce stay in his home so he can enjoy his home instead of having it be a burden!

Yaquese W.

As a single mom, Yaquese was working hard but not earning enough to pay for the car repairs she desperately needed, and she had also fallen behind on her utility bills.  She just just needed a helping hand. Yaquese was referred to us and after meeting with her it was obvious she was a deserving recipient for some assistance.

Yaquese is like so many single parents who tend to fall through the cracks, making too much money for state assistance but too little to cover emergency expenses.  The Mitts Family Foundation was proud to be able to make the necessary repairs to her car and help her get caught up on rent and utilities!
